What can I do to prevent other infections and problems?

Make an appointment for your annual Comprehensive Physical Exam with Rectal Exam (Anoscope).
A rectal exam is a very important screening which may allow detection of persons at risk for developing anal cancer. Although anal cancer is a rare malignancy in the general population, the incidence of anal cancer among men and women with HPV (human papiloma virus) infection who practice anal intercourse is much greater than that for their uninfected peers. Early detection of individuals at risk, follow-up exams, and treatment of early lesions could decrease the incidence of cancer.

HIV-infected women should have a pelvic examination and Pap smear performed two times a year to screen for cancer, genital warts or human papiloma virus (HPV).

Immunizations (vaccinations) enable a healthy immune system to fight off certain infections. If you have advanced HIV disease, your immune system probably cannot respond to vaccinations well, or they will not be useful. Taking antiretroviral therapy for a period of time before receiving vaccinations may strengthen your immune system and improve your response.
